Each year, our students are put into family groups (2-3 students from each class per family) for several activities throughout the year. The families are “led” by 6th grade students, who do much of the planning for family activities as well. At their first gathering this year, our family groups spent a little time getting to know their members, then took a walk outside to gather leaves, and then brought those in to do an art project – using crayons on paper over the leaves to pick up the texture. These will be used to help decorate for our Thanksgiving feast on November 21.
In family groups the older students always help the younger students, and our 6th graders have an opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership skills as they plan and carry out the family activities. Our students really enjoy doing family activities and having the opportunity to be with students of all grades!!
